Step 1: I wash in the sky with Cobalt Blue, and some of that color on the snow. While the sky is wet, I paint in the distant trees with a variety of colors, letting them softly merge with the sky. Notice how I've painted around lighter areas but into the train a little.

Step 2: Next I paint the large bridge shape and join it with the power poles, train, and tracks. This begins a visual pathway throught the painting.

Step 3: Time for some color to add 'punch'. The red engine, green shed, and dark shadows on the lift bridge add visual interest.

Step 4: This is the stage that really brings a painting together - the shadows. They clarify form and direction of light, and they break up all those big shapes I start with.

Step 5: Last but not least, all the little details. Power lines, railings, some warm dry-brush in the foreground and a little white gouache rubbed in with my finger for smoke finish things off.
